ELTA Newsletter September 2009

Dear colleagues,

It’s never been easier, yet more difficult, to teach a language. Language teachers, unlike many others who teach different school subjects, are lucky to have an abundance of text books at their disposal, magazines and other teaching aids they can use. However, each new generation of students we teach is a world different from all the previous ones we’ve taught – they usually have better background knowledge of the language, technology-related interests in language learning, good communication skills, etc. It is up to us as teachers to find approaches adequate enough to meet their expectations and quench their thirst for knowledge. More often than not it turns out that the best approach a teacher can take is to learn what his/her students need from real life and to tailor- teach in order to suit their individual interests and needs. By doing so, a teacher enables students to learn things by doing, i.e. by being active participants in the learning process.

The magazine that is in front of you is a collection of different approaches to teaching and the teaching career that have worked for many of our colleagues. Maybe they’ll work for you too, or at least they’ll inspire you to find your own new approach.

And last – but certainly not the least – the winners of the quiz sponsored by Zavod za udzbenike i nastavna sredstva: Danijela Ljubojevic (1st prize, Standard Serbian-English Dictionary), Marija Jovic (2nd prize, English-Serbian Phraseological Dictionary and Serbian-English Dictionary of Idioms), Bozidar Petrovic (3rd prize, Medical English Serbian Serbian- English Dictionary). Congratulations!

Enjoy reading and happy new school year!

Yours,

Editorial team
